EPL title: Leicester gets royal backing

THE mayor of Leicester wants to commemorate Claudio Ranieri and his players by renaming the city’s streets after them if they win the Premier League title this season.

Leicester have shocked the football world by opening up a seven-point lead at the top of the table with just six matches remaining, and Sir Peter Soulsby is determined to recognise their achievements.
“Leicester has honoured its sporting stars in the past,” he said. “There is an area named after golfers and there is also a Lineker Road
“It has been a real team effort, so as well as Vardy Vale we would need to have Schmeichel Street, Drinkwater Drive and Ranieri Road.”
If the Foxes’ players weren’t motivated enough already, the prospect of having a road named after them should act as a terrific incentive to remain on top.
Meanwhile, the team’s midfielder, Mark Albrighton has declared that their remarkable season will be “worthless” without winning the Premier League.
The Foxes are just six games away from hoisting the title aloft with a seven-point lead over second-placed Tottenham.
Leicester’s table-topping run comes after they pulled off the great escape to avoid relegation last season, having been seven points adrift of safety at the foot of the table only 12 months ago.
But Albrighton believes his side’s amazing efforts will mean nothing unless they claim silverware in May.
“It has been going on so long that we keep saying a year ago today,” he said.
“Where we were to this, it is a massive transformation. We will never get away from that fact.
“But we have got to concentrate on where we are now. Although it is fantastic it will be worth nothing if we don’t see it out.”
Leicester have excelled by keeping their heads during the business end of the term, grinding out 1-0 wins in each of their last four games.
Leicester will tomorrow be away to Sunderland at the Stadium of Lights as they seek to consolidate their EPL leadership.
